Shallow, Shallow Lives

Well, minions, as you well know, often the world can be a bitter place. Sometimes you are constantly surrounded by shallow people, and in most cases it is worsened because they’re oblivious to the fact.

Most of us woke up to the news that Amy Winehouse died. And if we’re completely honest with ourselves, we’ll all agree we saw it coming - after all, she led a troubled life. Nevertheless, I’d like to add my sentiments and share the words of my half-sister that I found rather fitting: “May you find peace in the next life that you couldn’t find in this one”.

By now, you’re all wondering where the ‘shallowness’ comes in. Alright, then. Here it comes.

On Friday 22nd July, Ut?ya island, Norway: Anders Behring Breivik detonated a bomb and then, while disguised as a police officer, began shooting youths as they ran for their lives. The death toll currently stands at 91.

A little bit over a week ago, Rebecca Leighton, a nurse at Stepping Hill Hospital in Manchester, United Kingdom contaminated the saline bags of patients, killing 5 with one more in very poor condition in the critical care unit. She is charged with 3 counts of Criminal damage with intent to endanger life, 3 counts of Criminal damage being reckless as to whether life was being endangered, and 1 count of Theft of medicine. Apparently the Hippocratic Oath didn’t quite sink in for her…

Saturday night, in the Zhejiang province, China: High-speed train D301 collided with Bullet-train D3115, causing derailment, killing 33 and injuring a further 190 passengers. 21 other trains were suspended.

Over the last week or so, there have been protests in Syria. Syrian armed forces have been involved in several clashes with protestors, and the death toll in Homs is already in the 30’s. This includes the 16 people killed when armed forces opened fire on a funeral procession.

All of this going on around the world in just the last week. So many pointless deaths. Because one of those deaths was a celebrity, guess which one scores the front page, and is all anyone is talking about today…

Why people automatically value the life of a celebrity over that of ordinary people, I don’t know. My personal view is all lives are equal. Amy’s celebrity status doesn’t add value to her live, and likewise her struggles with mental illness and drug abuse did not reduce the value of her life. I think we can put it down to media sensationalism, and the apparent fact that most people are sheep and will do and believe everything they’re told to.

Shallowness ought to be a crime against Morality.
